I donât know why I was expecting Marco to be workshy⦠I suppose itâs the semi-slippery nature of the way he operates, and the big pay-offs rather than a steady wage, that tricked me into thinking he wasnât the type to sit around and put in the hard work. Turns out I had him all wrong.
Marco is currently showing me the new website â live â because heâs been working on it at home, in his free time, for no money â and, wow, it looks amazing.
âThe new design is really polished,â he explains as he navigates me around the site. âItâs the perfect balance of minimal design and punchy, visual calls to action, leading your eyes instantly to the most important bits of information.â
I donât completely understand what heâs saying but it sounds good, and the website certainly looks good. And Marco seems so proud of his work, which is just so nice to see. He comes alive when he knows what heâs talking about. Heâs already a pretty confident person anyway, but when itâs his time to shine, itâs as if a few extra light bulbs flick on, and itâs ridiculously sexy⦠even if it is totally nerdy.
âYouâve done such an amazing job,â I tell him. âThe guys out there arenât going to be able to say a bad word about it.â
âThereâs more to do, too, that will make it run even better. SEO, finding better ways to monetise it⦠Iâll crack on with it now, if you like?â he suggests.
âYouâre a dream,â I tell him. âThank you. Iâm just about to submit my replies to some of the latest problem letters. Itâs funny, I found this book of my mumâs â the last one she wrote before she died â and Iâve been searching it for answers to the questions sent in, and I just disagree with her on so many points.â
âOh, really, like what?â he asks curiously.
âWell, like this one man who has written in, saying his son is acting up, because he feels like his parents are always breathing down his neck, and theyâre worried heâs up to something⦠Going off my mumâs advice, you should be in your kidâs business as much as possible, they shouldnât have an ounce of privacy. And that totally checks out, because we werenât allowed a lock on the bathroom doors until we were well into our teens.â
âWeird,â he replies. âSo, what are you going to say?â
âIâm going to tell them to give him a bit of space â or at least appear to. Heâll stop feeling so smothered and stop acting up, and if he is actually up to something, well, heâll get careless and theyâll rumble him. Itâs win-win.â
âWow, thatâs funny,â Marco says with a smile.
âWhat is?â I ask.
âThat people with their lives the least together are actually the best at giving advice,â he points out.
Huh, Iâd never thought about it like that, but it makes sense. Iâd imagine, if I was a struggling single mum, with
